The Many Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is different from regular dentistry in the fact that it doesn’t treat cavity treatments, root canals, deep cleaning and other issues you need to have when you have a tooth ache or are coming in for a bi annual check up.

However, cosmetic dentistry still is playing an increasingly greater role in today’s world with more and more people opting for cosmetic procedures to look younger, feel better and get ahead in their personal or professional lives. Cosmetic dentistry is not just about one kind of procedure, it can be sub divided into a few different treatments which people may opt for to beautify their smile.

Implants

This is the new dentures and bridge alternative which is making waves across the world. Dental implants are permanent solutions to tooth loss which could have occurred due to age, poor condition of teeth or some medical trauma. Dental implants fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry because they are not the only alternative to tooth loss; they are just the best and the priciest. Hence, some dental insurance companies may not cover the cost just like they wouldn’t for laser vision correction when glasses and contacts are widely available

Whitening

This is another form of cosmetic dentistry that has even permeated the over the counter market. However, if you choose a professional cosmetic dentist to perform the whitening you can be sure of the results. While some people still have discolored teeth due to disease or excessive smoking, most people do note a drastic difference n their smile with this cosmetic dentistry procedure. The only downside is that a patient might feel slight tooth sensitivity after the treatment.

Veneers

Another sub category in cosmetic dentistry, veneers are often suggested to people who have not met with much success with traditional whitening procedures. Or if they have had chipped or broken tooth, a veneer can attach to the original tooth restoring its appearance. Dental veneers are often made of porcelain and are specifically created to match your tooth shade.

Fillings

Even though dental fillings would usually fall under general dentistry, some types of fillings do classify as cosmetic dentistry procedures as they are made from colors or amalgams that match the color of your teeth so that are not as visible as gray, silver or gold ones.

Again, find out if and how much of your cosmetic dentistry procedure if at all is covered by your insurance company before you sign up. This is because a full mouth reconstruction or smile lift can cost up to $100, 000, so buyer beware.
