Main Functions

Also, while the dentist is treating the patient, you as a dental assistant must be their by the side of the dentist ready to provide whatever help the dentist requires including handing the dentist his or her tools and other items of equipment. Whats more, you will also need to clean up the instruments, and keep them properly assembled on the treatment tray and also provide advice to patients about which precautions to take after having had their dental treatment.

As a dental assistant, you may sometimes also be called upon to prepare lotions as well as materials that are used to create teeth impressions and also may need to conduct any dental tests that are necessary, and also handle collected X-ray films according to the instructions given by the dentist. Other tasks that you may be called on to perform include cutting stitches or sutures and also applying disinfectants while needing to also inject the patient with anesthetics on the part that is affected and which has to be treated.

As a dental assistant you may also be required to clean unwanted filling material that is used while filling and sometimes you may also be called on to fix rubber clips that help in marking the infected teeth for which separate treatment is required. Dental assistants must be professionally trained and this they can get from attending courses on dental assistance and there are various institutes that offer such courses where all the necessary skills are taught.

If you are interested in becoming a dental assistant you should opt for biology and chemistry as well as health and office practices as these will come in very handy as you embark on a career as a dental assistant.
